![]() ![]() “He rarely played at Sparta and for whatever reason they didn’t believe in him. “I honestly believe his loan spell at Bohemians is the best thing that could’ve happened to him,” says Jakubowicz. These days the club have emerging prospect Adam Hlozek on their books but there was once a time when the immediate need for results prevented young players like Schick from factoring in the manager’s plans. Darek Jakubowicz, the managing director at Bohemians, believes Sparta never appreciated Schick’s talents. Schick played a total of 36 league minutes during his time with Sparta’s first team between 20. Fans of Sparta Prague and Bohemians don’t like each other so when Patrik joined they were like, ‘Why on earth have we signed him?’ But when he started scoring goals the fans realised he was becoming an important player for us and they loved him.” He has that X factor and once he felt settled at the club that’s when he started to shine. “Patrik is an introvert but when he was on the pitch he was a killer. “He was a young player so he still had plenty to learn,” says Trucha. ![]() The likes of Vaclav Kadlec, David Lafata, Kehinde Fatai and Lukas Julis were ahead of Schick in the pecking order but those at Bohemians were aware of his potential. It was Bohemians who took a chance on the forward when parent club Sparta Prague were reluctant to give him an opportunity in the first team. In 27 league appearances, Schick scored eight goals. It has been five years since he last wore the green and white jersey, yet those at the club still view Schick as a great role model for the young players. But long before the 25-year-old rose to prominence, it was during a loan spell at Bohemians in 2015-16 that he honed his craft to start becoming the player he is today. Schick is proving to be the poster boy for the Czech Republic at these Euros after his audacious goal from the halfway line against Scotland highlighted his quality and he is one goal away from drawing level with the tournament’s top scorer Cristiano Ronaldo. But there was one game we needed to win and Patrik scored two goals and we thought, ‘Hallelujah, he has arrived. “Being in a situation like that was so hard and upsetting at times. “Our form was terrible, we were struggling to get points on the table and we were pretty much on the verge of getting sacked,” Trucha tells The Athletic. ![]()
